Toyota is a multinational corporation with its headquarters in Japan. It currently boasts that it is the largest automaker in the world, and it employs 316,000 people worldwide.
Toyota had its beginnings in 1934 when Toyota industries designed its first engine. Soon afterwards Toyota produced its first cars, and made a spinoff brand from Toyota industries to focus specifically on automobiles.
The company expanded in the 1960's when it started a new research and development facility, and started gaining an international presence.
During the 1970's Toyota cars' reputation for being small and fuel efficient helped the company gain preference in North America during the nationwide gasoline price hikes.
Its tradition of excellence continues today as in 2005 Toyota ranked number 8 among the world's leading companies.
